In all instances care has been taken to hide modern features, such as central vacuum system, modern electrical and HVAC.  Wherever possible and as budget permitted lighting and wall switches were reproductions of old fixtures.  Care was taken to maintain the original layout of the home and not cut in for return air ducts, plumbing and wiring, by accessing the existing crawl space and open attic space as much as possible.

Work done in 2000-2001

  • Removed all radiators and boiler system – not original to the home and installed modern heating system with central air
  • Refinished all hardwood floors
  • Carefully removed old decorative corbels and stored for eventual restoration and repositioning.
  • Removed decorative molding from around the gables for eventual refurbishing and repositioning.
  • Replaced slate roof with new slate and rebuilt decaying widow’s walk, including new flashing and soffit.
  • Repaired and resurfaced 70% of the plaster walls and ceilings with plaster, including extensive repairs to the cornice mouldings.
  • Shored up ceiling in the laundry/mud room for eventual resurfacing.
  • Removed the window shutters as they were not part of the original home design.
  • Gutted main floor kitchen and installed reproduction cabinets and appliances to maintain historical look and feel.  All wood trim was stripped of many layers of paint and stained and sealed to restore the natural wood finish.
  • Resurfaced the driveway
  • Updated all plumbing and electrical service.

Work done in 2002

  • Added on second floor bedroom over the existing laundry/mud room and finishing the roof as a walk-out deck from the third floor space.
  • Insulated attic space to prevent major heat loss
  • Created a unique lamp post sign reflecting the original name of the homestead – Island View.

Work done in 2003 – 2004

  • Work was done to finish the attic space, except carpeting.
  • Upgrading was done to two bathrooms with modern reproduction fixtures and finished walls and ceilings accordingly.
  • Work was completed interior work to the new second floor bedroom with modern reproduction materials, including large cornice mouldings to match other rooms.

Work done in 2005 to present

  • Finished front foyer entrance with reproduction wall paper and reclaimed wood trim
  • Finished master bedroom walls and ceiling using period colours and reproduction wallpaper.

Pending work to be done
Rebuild side porch reclaiming existing materials where possible
